Hazmat General Warning RUBBISH TIP FIRE IN NEWMAN IN THE SHIRE OF EAST PILBARA



The following alert has been issued by
the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Please note changes throughout. Winds continue to be variable, which may result in smoke blowing over Newman townsite.

Hazmat General Warning - RUBBISH TIP FIRE in NEWMAN in the SHIRE OF EAST PILBARA

ALERT LEVEL

There is a HAZMAT fire in Newman near the intersection of Yates Road and Welsh Drive in the SHIRE OF EAST PILBARA.

A rubbish tip is on fire, potentially causing smoke to blow in variable directions, including over the Newman townsite. Recent rainfall has assisted in suppression efforts, however this incident is still expected to continue to impact the community over the coming days.

WHAT TO DO

  • As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.
  • People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.
  • People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422 ).

ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS

Roads have not been closed.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully. Road information may also be available from Main Roads WA by visiting the Main Roads Travel Map , calling 138 138  or by contacting your Local Government Authority.

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING

  • The Shire of East Pilbara is managing the incident and has staff continuously onsite.
  • The Shire of East Pilbara is using heavy machinery to assist in containing and suppressing the fire.
